He will be forever missed … "B" and I had one of those friendships that are rare and treasured … one that absolutely touches the soul. That dry wit made it possible for him to say things to me that anyone else would have been decked for! Always trimmed and pressed he presented himself to the world with such quiet pride. Rock on my friend!
Brian was a real “sweet heart” of a guy. Always smiling and friendly. He was quiet and pensive and was expert at inserting the appropriate word or sentence at the appropriate time in any discussion. I will miss him.
Such a kind and caring person. Always a leader in our extended Gardner family. Thanks for the memories you shared with me about your time with Lex, my brother. You will be terribly missed.
My condolences to Mary and family.I knew Brian as our quiet neighbor. I now know he was so much more. What a wonderful tribute to a wonderful life.
I was privileged to work next to Brian for many years. He was a great mentor with his roofing expertise (among many other things) and encouraged me to join the Obsidians. During my involvement with the Obsidians I learned mountain climbing skills and with Brian’s leadership summited Broken Top, Mt Washington, and Three Finger Jack! Brian made a significant impression in my life 💗
Mary and family,
This is a wonderful tribute to Brian. His love of family and the outdoors that he has shared with all of us!
We had such a great time camping with you over at the coast! Finding all the similarities between our husbands 🙂 We so enjoyed ourselves.
Cherish all of these beautiful memories!!
I met Brian after he and Mary were married. Brian married Mary and became the father of her two small children. He took them under his wings as if he were their biological father and raised them as his own. He not only provided a wonderful life for Mary, but he became a wonderful member of the entire family. He will be missed ! I was fortunate enough to share some amazing Christmas gatherings with him and the family. I used to love seeing he and Mary at Emeralds games! Rest in Peace my friend!
I always enjoyed being around Brian. He was a very kind man. His love showed for his family in many ways. He will be deeply missed.

While my time with Grandpa Brian was short in comparison to the family members and friends who knew him for longer than I have been alive, Grandpa has always been there for me. From teaching me about the natural world to helping me catch my very first fish, I have many fond memories of this amazing human being I was lucky to call a grandpa. He is missed, but I will carry with me all of the things he has taught me for the rest of my life, and share these experiences with other people.
Mary,
I was sad to read about Brian’s passing.
I enjoyed visiting with him over the years at Dr Larson’s.
I want you to know I am thinking of you and sending a hug.
Blessing to you and your family,
Lauri
I share this from a recent Obsidian's newsletter informing members of Brian's passing:
"Brian joined the Obsidians in 2004 and quickly became involved in club activities, leading 30 of his 76 trips and 31 of his 47 climbs. He served as
Lodge Chair and Summer Trips Chair. An architect, he provided his expertise in the planning of the Lodge remodel.
Elected President, Brian was featured in the December 2007 Bulletin: New Club
President Took Interesting Route to the Lodge, where he shared his inspiration: I
always wanted to climb the mountains I could see from here [his office]. At age 50, he embraced the motto: 'It’s now or never,' and went on to earn the prestigious Obsidian Ten Peak Leader Award in 2009.
In his President’s Message for the September 2008 Bulletin, he reflected on his experience at Camp Hamilton in the Sawtooths:
Since I’m the 2008 president of the Obsidian Board, I felt obligated to go to summer camp this year. After all, the camps are usually named for the current president. So, my wife Mary and I found a sitter for our dogs and made arrangements to attend.
There’s a lot of truth in the old saying ― Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. After a week at summer camp, I’m pleased to say that I enjoyed it much more than I could have imagined. Before arriving in camp, we attended the pre-camp rally and it hit me that because the Obsidians have been doing this for a long time, they have really figured out how to do it right. Once we got to Camp Hamilton we realized that we had never been to a camp like this before. We had a great time! The people, the food, the camp facilities, the variety of daily activities, and the location are just some of the things I really liked about summer camp. Obsidians are wonderful people! We made new friends and got to know others better.
Brian shared his adventurous spirit with so many."
Brian was like another father to me. He taught me so much about what I love to do, but also little things about life. He is missed.
